U.S. President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and his daughters Malia and Sasha handed out food at Washington's Capital Area Food Bank on Wednesday, a day before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Each family member handed out a food item to people lining up at the food bank. President Obama filled bags with onions, Michelle handed out carrots, Sasha was in charge of apples and Malia had a special treat: boxes of M&Ms candy bearing the presidential seal.

Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, also helped out, putting recipe cards into the bags with the ingredients for sweet potato curry.

Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday with a traditional feast of turkey and trimmings.
