'12 Years a Slave' and 'Nebraska' lead Spirit award nominees

The nominations for the 2014 Film Independent's Spirit Awards have been announced. "12 Years A Slave" got seven nods, including best screenplay, best male lead for Chiwetel Ejiofor, best supporting male for Michael Fassbender, best supporting female for Lupita Nyong'o, and one for the top prize, best feature.

Coming in with six nominations was "Nebraska" - a sweeping melancholy black and white comedy about a dying man. In addition to best feature, it earned nods for its director Alexander Payne, lead actor Bruce Dern and comedian Will Forte for best supporting actor.

Other highlights include a nod for Robert Redford as best lead actor for "All is Lost;" Matthew McConaughey has lead for "Dallas Buyers Club," and Cate Blanchett as lead actress for "Blue Jasmine."

The awards, voted by Film Independent members and seen as the Oscars of independent film, will be handed out on March 01.
