Russia: US captain of Greenpeace ship granted bail

The American captain of a Greenpeace ship used in an Arctic protest has been granted bail by a Russian court as hearings continue.

Peter Willcox, 60, was among those arrested by the Russian authorities for attempting to scale a state-owned oil rig in the Barents Sea on September 18.

The group of activists, known as the ‘Arctic 30’, have been charged with hooliganism and face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

More than half of the ‘Arctic 30’ have so far been granted bail – in hearings being held this week.

Britons Alex Harris and Kieron Bryan were bailed along with Dutch nationals Faiza Oulahsen and Mannes Ubels on Wednesday.

Greenpeace said it would make the bail payments as soon as possible.
