Controversy over 'Ram Leela' HC notice to Punjab over Sanjay Leela Bhanshali's plea against FIR

Taking up a plea seeking quashing of an FIR registered against the star cast, producer and director of Bollywood flick "Ram Leela" for hurting the religious sentiments, the Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday issued notice the Punjab government and the complainant asking them to file reply on the issue.

The petition was filed by director and producer of the movie, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, actor Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone against the registration of case against them in Jalandhar district of Punjab.

They have pleaded before the HC that the film is inspired by William Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'. While making it clear that their movie nothing to do with hurting of religious sentiments of any community because the name Ram and Leela refer to the names of the two protagonists and thus the title of the movie is justified. "Even the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted certification to the movie for relase as per the relevant statute. Thus, no offence under section 295-A of the IPC is made out," Sanjay Leela Bhansali and others added in their petition.
