At least 19 people were killed on Sunday in the Peruvian Andes when a bus
went off the highway and plunged around 100m into a ravine, police said.

The bus, en route from Lima to Acombamba went off the road in the Huancavelica region in southern Peru.

According to local press reports the Antezana company bus crashed through a barrier early on Sunday morning near the town of Carhuaranja.

Local radio stations reported that two children were among those killed. Around 20 others were injured in the accident.

Police said that local authorities are using cranes in a bid to recover the bodies of the dead.

Nearby residents and relatives of those involved in the crash gathered around the site of the crash and helped in the rescue effort, turning the bus upright in a bid to help rescuers extract the bodies of the injured who remain trapped inside the vehicle's wreckage.

Deadly bus crashes are a frequent occurrence in Peru because of the country's many mountain roads, poor vehicle maintenance and driver inexperience.
