Trick bomb kills four, injures six in Thailand's restive south
  • 10 years ago
Four bomb technicians were killed and six injured when a homemade gas cylinder bomb previously defused, later exploded in Thailand's restive south.
The navy explosive ordnance disposal technicians had defused the bomb on site near an insurgent banner condemning government-sponsored peace talks.
The device, a homemade gas cylinder bomb contained 25 kilograms of explosives.
After defusing the device, the team then transported it back to their headquarters in the south to remove the explosive material from the rudimentary contraption.
During this process, two wires in the bomb connected and triggered what appeared to be a secondary detonator, causing the bomb to explode.
The trick bomb, with a "booby trap" secondary detonator is a new tactic being employed by separatist insurgents in the south in a bid to increase casualties to government and military personnel.
