An aged couple from Bangalore was found lying in a pool of blood in a room of a hotel in Sagar in Karnataka's Shimoga district on Monday night. While the man was dead, the woman was battling for life, and a rope was tied around her neck.

Kasturirangan, 70, his wife Rama, 65, and son Nagananda, 35, had checked into the hotel in Sagar, about 350km from Bangalore, on Monday evening. Kasturirangan was a retired software engineer and was working for a private company, police said. The family had travelled from Bangalore to Sagar and were to visit Jog Falls on Tuesday. They had informed the hotel authorities they would be staying overnight.

On Monday night, when they failed to turn up, worried hotel staff knocked on the door but failed to get a reply. When the room was forcibly opened, they found the couple lying inside.

They rushed Rama to a government hospital where she is said to be recovering from shock and pain. Kasturirangan's body was shifted for postmortem. Nagananda, the prime suspect, is absconding.

As the family had given the hotel two different addresses, police questioned Rama but could elicit only a confused response. She revealed the family had a loan of over Rs 65 lakh, and unable to repay it. They had decided to end their lives by jumping into the Jog Falls.

Police said a family member, who rushed to Sagar from Bangalore, said the family had no such loan burden, but did have a property dispute and the father and son had had a quarrel recently.

Deputy superintendent of police of Sagar Devaraj said they were investigating the reason behind the murder, and have alerted all stations to look for Naganand.

In another twist, Naganand's wife, Divya, on Tuesday filed a complaint of dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws. She alleged the family had harassed her physically and mentally for dowry, ever since her marriage on February 10, 2012.

ACP (Madivala sub-division) BS Shantha Kumar told TOI that police had registered a case of dowry harassment following the complaint. He said Sagar police are in touch with their Bangalore counterparts to locate Naganand. "We fear he may have ended his life in Sagar or somewhere else," he said.

Police sources said after killing his father and injuring his mother, Naganand may have jumped into the Jog Falls, as they had earlier planned.
