Grumpy Harrison Ford Roles: Jack Ryan 8
Harrison Ford and Tom Clancy. It was a match made in macho movie heaven that just had to happen in the '90s. As the morally upright CIA agent Jack Ryan, Ford saved America through sheer grumpiness and force of will twice, first in Patriot Games and then in Clear and Present Danger. He was so right for the part that any other attempts to cast Ryan have fallen flat (and sadly, that fate even seems inevitable for Chris Pine’s upcoming swing of the Clancy bat). While we loved Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October, we much preferred Ford's older -- and yes, grumpier -- version of Jack Ryan. The role of CIA-analyst-turned-operative proved to be one of Ford’s finest middle-aged action roles, and it’s a shame that only two titles from Clancy’s seemingly endless Jack Ryan series got the Ford treatment before he retired from the role.
