Olympic track star "Blade Runner" to face additional gun charges

South African Olympic track star Oscar Pistorius, aka "Blade Runner," will face two additional --but prior-- gun-related charges in the murder trial of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

The charges relate to two incidents in which Pistorius is alleged to have fired a gun in public, prior to the Valentine's day shooting.

A spokesman for South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority explains the consolidated charges:

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NATIONAL PROSECUTING AUTHORITY (NPA) SPOKESPERSON, NATHI MNCUBE, SAYING:

""The charges were already there. It's not new charges as it has been reported...At the same time it's convenient for both parties. It's going to save costs for both party, parties and truly expedite the matter also for both parties."

Prosecutors maintain he is a cold-blooded killer, and will likely rely heavily on forensics and witnesses accounts, who say they heard shouts before shots were fired, the night his girlfriend killed.
