As many as sixty people were injured after a train derailed in Connecticut on Friday evening and hit an oncoming train heading to New York City.
According to reports, the two commuter Metro-North trains were travelling in opposite directions.
The eastbound train was travelling from New York to New Haven and was carrying around 300 passengers.
The other train was New York-bound coming from New Haven and was carrying about 400 passengers, NBC reported.
The accident occurred shortly after 6pm when the eastbound train headed to New Haven derailed and was hit by the westbound train.
According to a passenger, an entire compartment of one of the trains was ripped wide open, leaving passengers strewn in between both trains, Reuters reported.
A separate witness was cited by NBC saying a train window had to be smashed to allow passengers to escape.
The injury count could rise as hospitals officials have been told to prepare to receive up to 180 patients, according to a Reuters report.
