STORY: The opposition in Bahrain called for a mass weekly demonstration on Friday and dozens of anti-government protesters marched on the Budaiya highway near Abu Saiba, west of the capital Manama.
The march was initially peaceful, but later in the day a small group of protesters blocked the road with debris, set rubbish bins on fire and attacked riot police monitoring the march.
On Thursday, a senior Bahraini opposition politician was temporarily freed by the court trying him on charges that include inciting terrorism.
Khalil al-Marzouq, a former parliament member, was detained in September by police investigating his alleged promotion of terrorism.
The arrest angered his Shi'ite Islamist al-Wefaq party, Bahrain's largest opposition group.
The group called for protests on Friday.
Bahrain has seen similar protests, rallies and clashes since the beginning of February, 2011.
