Jean Paul Gaultier was in New York City for the opening of an exhibition dedicated to his groundbreaking work in fashion.

Entitled "The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk," the exhibit has been traveling the world for two years and has just opened at the Brooklyn Museum.

The multimedia exhibition is organized around seven themes tracing the influences on Gaultier's development since he first emerged in the 1970s and explores how his avant-garde designs challenged societal, gender, and aesthetic codes in unexpected ways. Featured prominently in the collections are costumes from his many collaborations with celebrities, including Madonna's stage wardrobe, that brought Gaultier fame in the U.S.
