Maltese military releases dramatic video of migrants rescue

A dramatic rescue in the Mediterranean Sea, captured on video and just now released.

It happened off the island nation of Malta on October 11.

The video was taken from a military aircraft that spotted a vessel in distress.

More than a hundred migrants were plucked from these waters by Maltese armed forces.

They were found about 60 nautical miles from the Italian island of Lampedusa.

In this incident, dozens drowned after their boat flipped over and capsized.

A week earlier -- hundreds died in the same area when a boat carrying Eritrean and Somali migrants sank.

The United Nations says some 32,000 migrants have arrived in southern Italy and Malta this year alone.

Most come from sub-Saharan Africa.

But this year many are fleeing the civil war in Syria or political turmoil in Egypt and other parts of North Africa.
