New Jersey man wakes from coma in Poland

A 69-year-old illegal immigrant was deported to Poland while in a coma after suffering a stroke in a New Jersey hospital. Wladyslaw Haniszewski had been living in the United States for 30 years, though as an undocumented immigrant. He was ill and a friend took him to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. While there, Haniszewski suffered a stroke and slipped into a coma.
Being homeless at the time, as well as without health insurance, the hospital decided to ship him while still unconscious to his native Poland, to a hospital in Boleslawiec, the place where he last held an address. The U.S. hospital claims they informed Haniszewski of their decision to deport him. The hospital in Poland said he was delivered before it agreed to the transfer. Haniszewski's friends and family were not informed of the move and as it was in the case in New Jersey, the senior citizen lacks an address and health insurance in Poland.
Haniszewski is now awake, but cannot communicate. Polish Consul General in the U.S., Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka, expressed her outrage at the forced repatriation, comparing Haniszewski's ordeal to "being carted around like a sack of potatoes".
