A young girl was killed and at least 11 people were injured when two mortar shells hit the Shaalan district in central Damascus on Saturday (October 12).

The Syrian State News Agency said the mortars hit the district causing destruction and damage to the surrounding shops and houses. The source of the attack was unknown.

The area was particularly busy at the time of the mortar attack because of preparations for the upcoming Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Syria's civil war has killed more than 120,000 people and forced millions from their homes since the troubles erupted in March 2011.
