The controversial Adda Pallakki Utsav of carrying Balehonnur Rambhapuri Jagadguru Veerasomeshwara Rajadeshikendra Shivacharya in a palanquin during the traditional Dasara darbar, beginning at Jewargi in Gulbarga district on Friday, is turning out to be a tug-of-war between the seers who oppose the practice, and those supporting it.

The seers, led by Sulpul Math chief Mahanta Shivacharyaru and Shivananda Mahaswami of Sri Siddalinga Viraktamath at Sonna and others, who opposed the practice of carrying Rambhapuri Jagadguru in a palanquin as a demeaning tradition and a violation of human rights, have urged the district administration to ban the practice.

Mahanta Shivacharyaru told The Hindu here on Tuesday that they were not against the Dasara darbar and other functions organised by the followers of Rambhapuri Jagadguru at Jewargi, but were only opposed to the practices like carrying the Jagadguru in a palanquin by others, which was a clear violation of human rights, and making Jagadguru to sit on a high platform while others had to sit on a lower platform. Everyone was equal in society and in a function named a communal harmony meet, such practices should not be allowed, he said.

He clarified that the seers opposing the Adda Pallakki ceremony were only organising a ‘pravachana’ (religious discourse) from October 1 to 21 at the Shanmukha Shivayogi Math, near the venue of the Dasara darbar, organised by the followers of Rambhapuri Jagadguru, and the discourse was not to counter the darbar.

Meanwhile, the seers, particularly the heads of a branch of the maths of Rambhapuri Jagadguru, staged a protest and met Deputy Commissioner N.V. Prasad and Superintendent of Police Amit Singh, seeking protection to the Adda Pallaki Utsav, which was a traditional practice observed from time immemorial by the followers of Rambhapuri Jagadguru.

They also demanded that a ban be imposed on the religious discourse being organised by the opposing seers. Revanasiddeshwar Shivacharya of the Saradgi Math and president of the coordination committee said the organisers of the Dasara darbar were firm on holding all traditional ceremonies. Meanwhile, Mr. Prasad has ordered postponement of both the Utsav and the discourse till further instruction, citing law and order problems.
