Teacher protest turns violent

Demonstrations turn violent Monday night in Rio as thousands turn out to support teachers on strike for higher wages.

The protests started out peaceful with at least 10,000 people gathered in the streets holding banners and waving flags.

One protester said the protest must remain united.

We have to unify to destroy the corrupt, she said. We don't have politicians, we have thieves and villains!

But as the night wore on, violence broke out.

Police fired tear gas into the crowds who returned fire with Molotov cocktails and rocks.

Masked demonstrators set trash bags on fire and kicked in storefront windows.

The incident comes one week after a similar teacher demonstration ended up in chaos and violence.
