The very mention of snake creates a fear psychosis among many. But do you know that a majority of snakes are non-poisonous and harmless?

July 16, observed as the World Snake Day, is an ideal occasion to know and understand many things about these carnivorous reptiles, which are on the path of extinction mainly because of the myths and superstitions surrounding them.

“There are 250 species of snakes identified in India as on the date. But only five species — king cobra, cobra, Russell's Viper, Malabar pit viper, and common kraits — are venomous.

“In Dharwad, 18 species have been identified. Rat snakes are human-friendly as they are the sole and main eliminators of rats that cause harm to grains and human health”, said Gangadhar Kallur, District Wildlife Warden.

Regretting the superstitious beliefs prevailing even among educated people about snakes, he said it was sad that the creatures which were worshiped in the form of sculptures, fall victim to human agony.

The number of snakes appearing in the human habitat has increased these days.

“However, we can safeguard ourselves and save the snakes provided we know about them and create awareness among people,” said Mr. Kallur who has been engaged in rescuing snakes for the past 30 years.

About the cobra that has been commonly worshiped as serpent god, he said it was the species that had been facing extinction. As it was venomous, people hunt it down to kill. But the cobra attacked only when it felt threatened.

But these snakes could be caught and shifted away with a bit of help from snake catchers. Besides, rat snakes that are commonly sighted are non-venomous and feed on rats.

“If we fail to save the snakes and go on killing them, the balance of the nature's food chain will be affected,” he said.
