A string of bombings that took place in predominantly Shi'ite provinces in Iraq on Sunday has killed a total of 24 people, bringing the total number of people killed in the country in July to date to more than 300, according to violence monitoring group, Iraq Body Count. Reuters reports that "sectarian tensions have been inflamed by the civil war in neighboring Syria, which is fast becoming a region-wide proxy war, drawing in Shi'ite and Sunni fighters from Iraq and beyond to fight on opposite sides of the conflict."
