Lane Kiffin fired: USC coach finally gets the sack

USC coach Lane Kiffin has finally been fired. Athletic director Pat Haden dismissed Kiffin after the Trojans lost 62-41 against Arizona State University. Ed Orgeron has been named interim coach.

The year hasn't started out well for USC. In the home opener, the Trojans notched up an embarrassing loss to the middling Washington State. USC has lost 7 of the past 11 games, leading fans to chant "Fire Kiffin. Fire Kiffin" at games.

The dismissal shouldn't have come as a surprise to Kiffin. The 62 points given up in the Arizona game ties a previous record. Haden waited until the team was back in Los Angeles and informed Kiffin of his decision at 3am at the team's private airport terminal. Kiffin reportedly attempted to change Haden's mind, but Haden couldn't be swayed.

The season didn't get off to a great start for Kiffin. USC lost its home opener game to the Washington State Cougars, a team it should have handily beat. This unsettled USC fans and alumni.

The job of keeping the team together until an interim coach can be found now falls to Ed Orgeron, is long-time friend of Kiffin. The two coached together at Tennessee. As the head coach of Ole Miss, Orgeron had a 10-25 record.
