Syrian FM likens fighting inside his country to 9/11 attacks

Addressing the UN General Assembly, Syria didn't shy away from controversy.

Foreign Minister Walid al Moualem likened what was happening in his country to the September 11th attacks.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SYRIAN FOREIGN MINISTER AND DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, WALID AL-MOUALEM, SAYING:

"The people New York have witnessed the devastation's of terrorism, and were burned with the fire of extremism and bloodshed, the same way we are suffering now in Syria. How can some countries, hit by the same terrorism we are suffering now in Syria, claim to fight terrorism in all parts of the world, while supporting it in my country? The claims about the existence of moderate militants and extremist militants have become a bad joke."

His remarks came on a day that saw fierce fighting in Damascus --- fighting the foreign minister says is mostly between government forces and foreign fighters from as many as 83 countries.

He attributed last month's sarin gas attack to rebels, addin
