UN approves Syria resolution

An historic day for diplomacy at the U.N. as members of the Security Council unanimously approve a resolution that demands the eradication of Syria's chemical weapons.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY, SAYING:

"Through peaceful means, it will for the first time seek to eliminate entirely the nation's chemical weapons capability, and in this case specifically Syria's."

There was no shortage of accolades for the resolution or for members of the Security Council.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N. SECRETARY-GENERAL BAN KI-MOON SAYING:

"Tonight, the international community had delivered. I am pleased the Security Council has found the unity to address to most significant us of chemical weapons in decades.

Syrian Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari stressed the need for all parties to comply.
