A Chinese police officer in the central province of Henan threw a newborn baby girl on the floor of a restaurant, crushing her skull over a bet the child was actually a doll.

Guo Zengxi, was drinking at the karaoke restaurant with friends when the group spotted a family sitting adjacent to them.

Guo made a bet with his other off-duty colleague that the baby was actually a toy being cradled by her father.

Horrified onlookers watched as Guo approached the father, patted the baby's face and then pulled the child from his arms before raising her over his head and smashing her onto the floor.

The baby girl suffered three skull fractures and has remained in hospital since the incident.

The officer received 15 days in "disciplinary confinement", but no other punishment was meted out for the unprovoked violence from a police.

Word of the incident provoked outrage in Henan and across China where officers of the law are seen as being above its reach.

Officials in the city if Linzhou, where the attack occurred, have promised citizens it will investigate the matter and make sure all acts are punished according to the law.

The violent act follows another one week prior, in which a man threw his two year old daughter onto a parking lot floor while arguing with his wife about parking.

The two-year-old girl later died from her injuries.
