STORY: Sting kicked off a series of intimate benefit concerts in New York with songs from his new album "The Last Ship."

"This is the first collection of new songs for me in almost a decade," Sting told the audience as he hit the stage.

The British pop star is performing ten special concerts to raise funds for New York's Public Theater art organization.

The concerts will run from September 25 through October 9 at the 260-seat Anspacher Theater at the arts organization in Manhattan.

The singer, who shot to fame in the band the Police, said the small venue is "a natural fit" to perform the material from the album.

"The Last Ship," was released on September 23rd and draws inspiration from Sting's childhood in northern England.

It is his first album with original material since "Sacred Love" in 2003.
