Vidya Balan was born on 1 January 1978 in Ottapalam, Kerala. Balan family re-located to Chembur, Bombay, when Vidya was very young. She did her schooling from St. Anthony's Convent School, and thereafter in St. Xavier's College from where she obtained a degree in Sociology and later earned a master's degree from the University of Mumbai. Vidya Balan is proficient in Tamil, Malyalam, Hindi, English and Bengali, and can also read Urdu.
