STORY: Turkish police fired smoke grenades and rubber bullets on Thursday night to disperse several hundreds of university students demonstrating for the second day against reconstruction plans that includes part of their campus.

Protesters erected barricades on roads and hurled stones at riot police, who responded by firing rubber bullets and dousing off the protesters with water.

The municipality plan opposed by the students involves building a road across the university campus and uprooting a large number of trees in the area.

The Middle East Technical University (METU) campus has one of the largest green spaces in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

Three months ago, a peaceful protest in Istanbul's Gezi Park against plans to reconstruct the area turned into a broader show of anger at Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government.
