Ma he's making eyes at me Mason Rod 1987
During a broadcast for German TV in 1987 British cornetplayer Rod Mason and his Hot Five playing and singing a vaudeville tune. After the vocals there is a banjosolo. The German banjoplayer has a beautiful sounding instrument with an almost metallic sound. It amazes me how Rod Mason always seem to challenge himself in his solowork and it feels that he is not going to make it, but he always manages to get out of it. Maybe just for this concert Rod had one of the finer stride pianists in the band. Here is Ray Smith who played for years with Ken Colyer.
Rod played for years with the Acker Bilk band and in the late seventies joined the Dutch Swing College Band. With them he came to Canada in 1983 and they were the guests of our Climax Jazz Band during a concert. We all became good friends with Rod.
Shortly after Rod moved to Germany and started his Hot Five and today in 2007 he is still gigging around. Good for you dear Rod!
