Chad Dixon of Indiana was sentenced to 8 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to training people how to beat a lie detector test.

The specific charges were obstructing a government proceeding and wire fraud.

His past pupils included individuals applying for government jobs and convicted criminals looking for a way to beat the restrictions imposed upon them by probation.

Dixon was paid 1000 dollars per day for his educational services, and it was estimated that he instructed between 70 and 100 people.

His lawyer argued that what he was doing was protected under the First Amendment as teaching people to lie is a matter of free speech.

Dixon himself held the position that he was only showing his students how to relax while hooked up to the polygraph machine.

The prosecutor saw it differently, saying that knowingly teaching people to lie on a federal exam equates to a federal crime.

In the end the judge decided that although “there’s…nothing unlawful about maybe 95 percent of the business he conducted…a sentence of incarceration is absolutely necessary to deter others.”
