STORY: Australian opposition leader Tony Abbott cast his vote early on Saturday (September 7) in a federal election, that he hopes will end six years of government by Kevin Rudd's Labor party and make him prime minister.
After nearly five weeks of intense campaigning the country decides who will form the government for the next three years.
Abbott, leader of the coalition, told a reporter in Sydney that the new prime minister has to be there for everyone.
"The best leaders are leaders who reach out to everyone and appreciate. If you are prime minister of a country you have to be a prime minister for everyone," he said.
Opinion polls throughout the campaign point to a comfortable victory for the Liberal National Coalition, ending a tumultuous six years in power for the Australian Labor Party.
