Indonesian Islamists burn effigy to denounce Miss World contest

For these aspiring beauty queens, the chance to win the 2013 Miss World pageant on the Indonesian resort island of Bali is a golden opportunity.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MISS WORLD CONTESTANT FROM CHINA TAIPEI, CINZIA CHANG SAYING:

"Hi I'm from Chinese Taipei which is Taiwan, I'm very happy to be here,"

But there's trouble brewing in Paradise.

In the Indonesian capitol, Jakarta, Islamist demonstrators protested the event outside the offices of pageant organizers.

The world's most populous Muslim nation, they say, is no place for such an explicit and public display of feminine charm.

Most of their anger is towards the man who owns the TV company that will broadcast the pageant.

"Our main purpose here is to protest against Hary Tanoesoedibjo as a local organizer of Miss World, to ask him stop the event as it violates the constitution, religion and also law in Indonesia
