Elon Musk's Hyper Loop: Hyper cool or over-hyped?
Tesla's Elon Musk had finally unveiled plans for his Hyperloop transportation system.

The superstar entrepreneur has dedicated much of his career to redefining frustrating transportation methods. The co-founder of electric car company Tesla Motors and commercial spacecraft company SpaceX has now turned his sights to another ambitious transport project dubbed "Hyperloop."

On Monday Musk unveiled the much anticipated plans by releasing a detailed 57-page document titled "Hyperloop Alpha."

In it he outlined designs for the high-speed train that would whisk passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles. He estimated it would cost a mere $6 billion. Far cheaper than California's $70 billion high-speed train, which critics, including Musk, have derided as too expensive and too slow.

With Hyperloop travelling at speeds of up to 800 miles per hour, Musk says the journey from Hollywood to the Bay Area could be completed in a cool 30 minutes. And according to Musk, passengers using Hyperloop would pay as little as $20 per trip.

In May the billionaire entrepreneur described the transportation system as a cross between a concorde, a railgun and an air hockey table.

The serial entrepreneur claims the superfast mode of transport could ferry not only people, but even cars.

"I think to make it really awesome you want the pod to take cars as well as people," Musk said in an interview. "You just drive on, and the pod departs."

In a conference call earlier this month with Tesla investors, Musk said he's unlikely to actively be involved in the project in the near future.

"I have to focus on core Tesla business and SpaceX business, and that's more than enough," Musk said, according to a Gizmodo report.

He didn't, however, rule out the possibility of working on the project in the future.

"If nothing happens for a few years, with that I mean maybe it could make sense to make the halfway path with Tesla involvement," Musk continued. "But [what] I would say is, you shouldn't be speculative."
