Taking shelter in the safety of open ground, these villagers have survived two strong earthquakes.
The quake and a powerful aftershock hit a remote area in China's north western Gansu province on Monday, killing 94 and leaving hundreds injured, according to state media.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported two earthquakes: the first a 5.9 magnitude quake and the second a 5.6 magnitude aftershock that struck about an hour and a half later.
State media reported over 1,200 buildings collapsed during the quakes, leaving more than 27,000 people homeless in the worst affected areas.
(SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) UNIDENTIFIED LOCAL RESIDENT SAYING:
"I suffered huge losses, and I have become homeless. I have four tons of precious Chinese medicine buried under the rubble."
Although a rescue operation is in progress, landslides and flooding have hampered their efforts, with more rain potentially exacerbating the need for shelter.
