Egypt's military displays air power over Cairo

STORY: Egypt's air force staged several fly pasts and aerial acrobatic maneuvers above Cairo on Sunday as tens of thousands of Egyptians gathered in Tahrir square to reaffirm support for the military's ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Mursi.

Massive protests on June 30 led the military on Wednesday (July 3) to overthrow Mursi, the country's first democratically elected president, after only one year in office.

Dozens of fighter jets and helicopters took part in several formations across the sky just before sunset as the rally took place in Tahrir square.

Supporters of the ousted president held a counter protest outside his place of detention in Cairo on Sunday while a military-driven plan to resolve the political crisis remained mired in mistrust and confusion.

The transitional authorities had been set to appoint liberal politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a favorite of young anti-Mursi protest leaders, before his candidacy
