Fierce fighting batters Syria's strategic city of Homs

Homs comes under attack as the battle for control in Syria moves street by street.

The video, which could not be independently verified by Reuters comes as Syrian state forces backed by the Lebanese group Hezbollah hammer the central city of Homs.

Homs has been at the epicenter of the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad and now is the focal point of a new push by Assad's forces.

Some opposition sources reported small advances for Assad's forces -- but others say the street-by-street battles signal that the overall balance of power is unchanged after more than a week of battles.

Many have warned that the fall of Homs would give Assad de facto control of central Syria. Others are confident that strongholds north of the city will provide enough cover to prevent a total loss of control.
