Chinese police ready for a riot

Chinese police - at the ready in the restive western region of Xinjiang.

Beijing said Saturday it was planning to clamp down on recent unrest in the territory, home to mainly Muslim Uighur people.

The warning came after a mob reportedly attacked a police station in the remote desert city of Hotan.

The increased security comes almost a week before the fourth anniversary of riots pitted Uighurs against ethnic Chinese.

Those clashes left nearly 200 people dead.

Many Uighur chafe at what they call Chinese government restrictions on their culture, language and religion.

China disputes those allegations.
