South Africans prepare to say goodbye to Mandela

Well-wishers leave mementoes at the Pretoria hospital where Nelson Mandela is being treated for a lung condition.

On Monday, South African President Jacob Zuma said the 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero and former president remains in a critical condition.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SOUTH AFRICA PRESIDENT, JACOB ZUMA, SAYING:

"The doctors are doing everything possible to ensure his well-being and comfort, we thank the media for support and keeping the public informed during this difficult time."

South Africans are praying he gets well, but are also preparing to say goodbye to the man who is seen as leading the country's struggle from apartheid to democracy.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LOCAL RESIDENT, ANDRONICA, SAYING:

"But I think in time, we can learn to accept it you know and move forward."

Members of his family also visited the former leader on Monday.

This is the fourth time Mandela has been hospitalized in six months.
