US, Russia find common ground in stopping Syria violence

U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet on the sidelines of the G8 meeting in Northern Ireland, against the backdrop of the war in Syria where the world powers are backing opposing sides.

But as the two met face to face for the first time in more than a year -- they focused on common ground.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN, SAYING:

"Of course our opinions of Syria do not coincide, but all of us have the intention to stop the violence in Syria- to stop the growth of victims and to solve the situation peacefully including by bring the parties to the negotiating table in Geneva."

The war in Syria has already killed more than 93,000 people.
