Russia says will not permit no-fly zone in Syria

As Vladimir Putin arrives for the G8 summit in Northern Ireland Russia is already signaling its concern that Western governments may push for a no fly zone in Syria.

On Monday Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said it would be an illegal action.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN ALEXANDER LUKASHEVICH, SAYING:

"All these maneuvers about no-fly zones and humanitarian corridors show a lack of respect for international law."

He also signaled that the veto wielding UN Security Council member could not support such a zone

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN ALEXANDER LUKASHEVICH, SAYING:

"I think fundamentally we will not allow this scenario. And reports that our American partners are doing preparatory works at military complexes related to this in Jordan are also a direct violation of international law."
