Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan emerged to cheers and applause at a rally attended by thousands of his supporters in Taksin Square --- a show of solidarity that was in stark contrast to the unrest and discord just miles away.

Anti-government protesters who tried to gather near the security perimeter were driven out by tear gas and water cannons.

Riot police also broke of demonstrations in Ankara, detaining score of people. It isn't clear at this point how many people have been arrested or whether the riots of the recent days will continue. What is clear after two weeks of violent clashes, is that Turkey's image a haven of stability in a turbulent region, has been tarnished.
