Syria fighting edges toward Israel

Fires rage in southern Syria - a stone's throw from Israeli-held territory - following heavy fighting on Thursday.

Syrian rebels and government forces are reportedly locked in pitched battles across this area, known as the Golan Heights.

On Thursday opposition forces seized a U.N.-manned border crossing, say activists.

Israeli troops are keeping a close watch on the fighting and residents have been urged to stay indoors.

But this farmer says so far, the clashes have not spilled across the border.

The Golan is supposed to have a demilitarized buffer zone between long-time enemies Syria and Israel.

But intense fighting - part of Syria's bloody civil war - has Israel worried that the region could become a springboard for jihadi attacks.
