00:08Part 2 Key Characteristics of Ambient Intelligence
00:16In the previous part of this issue, we got introduced to the concept of Ambient Intelligence.
00:24In this part, we will examine key characteristics of Ambient Intelligence.
00:34To enable Ambient Intelligence, the system needs to have simple and intuitive operations
00:40that react to gestures and language rather than traditional input devices like keyboard and mouse.
00:46Have analytical skills that enable target-oriented flexible actions that are personalized to individual users.
00:54Learn from the changing patterns of usage.
00:57And incorporate inconspicuous components embedded in the environment around the user.
01:06So let's examine six key characteristics of Ambient Intelligence.
01:11First, User-Friendly.
01:13Ambient Intelligence will be used by individuals who may not be as conversant with technology as engineers are.
01:21So the systems used for Ambient Intelligence should be user-friendly.
01:29Second, Personalized.
01:31Every individual is different.
01:33So Ambient Intelligence systems ought to be personalized to the needs, preferences and personalities of the target individual.
01:43Third, Adaptive.
01:45People change over time.
01:47So do their needs and preferences.
01:49In addition, the ambience in which Ambient Intelligence systems are embedded also changes over time.
01:57So AMI system should automatically adapt to these changes.
02:04Fourth, Embedded.
02:06The sensors, cameras, microphones and other technologies used to enable Ambient Intelligence
02:14should be integrated into the environment where the target individual is functioning.
02:21Fifth, Intelligent.
02:23AMI systems should be intelligent enough to anticipate a person's needs and desire
02:30as well as the context in which the person is operating, without any intermediation by the person.
02:40Sixth, Unobtrusive.
02:42An Ambient Intelligence system and all its components should be integrated into the surrounding structures
02:49in a way that they are inconspicuous and blend into the background.
02:56Having these characteristics built into an AMI is critical to ensure its long term use.
03:04In the next part of this issue, we will talk about who could be interested in Ambient Intelligence.
