00:00On the evening of April 2, 2023, a rather unusual incident would take place that led
00:12to the unthinkable. Let's investigate the story and find out what actually happened.
00:20The primary goal of the United States Customs Border Patrol is to prevent illegal activity
00:25from taking place such as drugs, weapons, and human smuggling. To accomplish this,
00:38checkpoints are set up on main highways that lead to border crossings. The drivers traveling these
00:44sort of roads are expected to check in, provide documentation, and submit to search when requested
00:49by an agent on the scene. At approximately 6.30 in the evening, a few miles outside of Las Cruces,
00:56New Mexico, a driver would attempt to take a detour and avoid the checkpoint. Officers nearby
01:02would take notice of the evasion and pursue.
01:05Nissan Rogue, he just drove around the cones.
01:0810-4, still westbound?
01:12Still westbound, just past the, uh, the point.
01:17He might be pulling over. Nope, never mind, just went back on.
01:21Alright, he's only going 40 miles an hour. Alright, he's motioning the pullover.
01:28Do you have your overheads and siren on?
01:30Yeah, that's correct. Can we be back with no records, sir? No record at this time?
01:36He's in the pursuit. Make sure you activate your body cameras.
01:39Camera activated at, uh, 2049.
01:43Several miles down the road, the patrol unit finally were able to catch up to the fleeing vehicle.
01:48He's on fire.
02:04He's on fire.
02:05Go, go, go.
02:28All right.
02:29The vehicle was stopped.
02:30Temporary blocked.
02:32The driver was ordered out.
02:33He refused.
02:34He drove around my vehicle.
02:35He is now continuing back eastbound on the same road, 32 miles an hour.
02:42With the assailant refusing to cooperate, a not-so-high-speed chase would occur.
02:49Can you send someone down to the 116 with some spikestries, please?
02:54With the vehicle partially crippled by road spikes, the driver was forced to stop.

06:06So far, how do you think the patrol officers are handling the situation?
06:25And would you be doing anything different at this point?
06:30Now, let's continue on with the story and see what happens next.
06:34Hey, just talk to me, man.

07:30Hey.
07:31Hey.
07:32Nous, nous, nous ne suprniejons.
07:36No.
07:37Choosing to attack the verfy patrol officer
07:39with a wooden club,
07:40would result in lethal force being used on the suspect.
07:43The man was later identified as Joelle Amberdy,
07:46a 32-year-old New York native.
07:49His family following the incident
07:51decided to speak out about the situation,
07:54suggesting he was struggling with his mental health issues at the time.
07:58She's convinced that border patrol agents
08:01could have handled this another way before firing multiple rounds at her son.
08:07They have overstepped, they have done things that are not okay and if in fact
08:14our the protocols and the rules that are in this agency allows this to happen
08:25then there needs to be some change in those rules and those protocols because
08:29this should never happen to another person.
08:33What do you think about this story? Did the patrol officers involved exhaust every
08:38opportunity to end this situation peacefully? Leave a comment below and let me know.
