00:00Sometimes you want to add a symmetrical constraint in FreeCAD.
00:06But then a frustrating thing appears, the redundant constraint error.
00:10This video will show you the solution.
00:15To simulate this, create a new sketch in the part design workbench
00:19and select a plane to sketch on, it doesn't matter which one.
00:25Then select the line tool.
00:30Draw a line with its center approximately on the horizontal or vertical axis.
00:36Enter a length of 30 mm, for example.
00:40Press Tab, enter an angle of minus 90 degrees to create a vertical line,
00:45and press Enter to apply.
00:48Click the right mouse button to exit the line tool.
00:52Now click on the two endpoints to select them.
00:57Then click on the axis on which the line is drawn.
01:02And add a symmetric constraint with this button.
01:06The line turns orange because there are redundant constraints.
01:10One solution is to click on this number and press Delete to remove the redundant vertical constraint.
01:18But a better solution is this.
01:20Click the undo button twice.

01:32Expand the menu if necessary.
01:37And click on this button in the Constraints menu.
01:41Then check the Auto Remove Redundant Constraints box.
01:46Make sure it's checked.
01:50Now click on the two endpoints again to select them.
01:53And click on the axis on which the line is drawn.
01:57Add a symmetric constraint.
01:59And you see it will not turn orange.
02:02Only one degree of freedom is left.
02:04You can click here to see which one that is.
02:08Both endpoints are highlighted.
02:13Click on the dimension tool button.
02:15And you see the redundant constraints error appears again.
02:20Click the undo button once.
02:25And select the dimension tool again.
02:28Click on one vertex and drag the mouse in the right direction.
02:32Click, enter a value and press Enter to apply the dimension.
02:35Now you see the line turns green because it's fully constrained.
02:39So, a simple checkbox can save you a lot of frustrations.
