02:51The group 4 playoff between England and the Soviet Union was a very close affair.
03:00Impressive early on was the England new cap Peter Brabuk, who hit the post twice and managed to put the ball into the Soviet net, only sees effort disallowed.
03:12Then in the 68th minute, Illion scored to make it 1-0 to the Soviet Union.
03:16That result puts the Soviets through at the expense of England going to the next round with Brazil.
03:25Two surprise contenders.
03:30The industrious Northern Ireland faced elegant France in Norcoping.
03:42The Irish prepared hard for what was to be their toughest game yet.
03:45But they could do nothing to stop Just Fontaine, who took another two goals to add to his overall tally in a decisive 4-0 victory for the French.
03:59At the Olevi Stadium, Gothenburg, the brave Welsh side, victors against Hungary, took on the Brazilians.
04:14The Juventus centre-forward Jean Charles was injured and had to look on the proceedings from the bench as Meduin forced a save for the Brazilian goalkeeper Gilmar.
06:07Piantoni scored again for the French, but it was too late to stop the Brazilian progress into the final.
06:13In the second semi-final, Sweden faced West Germany in a highly charged atmosphere.
06:26The Swedes brought their own cheerleaders onto the pitch to whip up support from a packed crowd.
06:31Early in the game, Schaefer volleyed a sailor cross to give the Germans the lead against the run of play.
06:46Only five minutes later, Sweden equalised, sending the home crowd wild.
06:55Early in the second half, Jaskoviak fouled the Swede Hamrin and was duly sent off by the referee.
07:01Soon after, Gren gave Sweden the lead and Hamrin, actor at one of the dramatic sideshows of his controversial game, scored to seal victory for the Swedes.
07:19All eyes were now fixed towards the final.
07:23The Swedish players were now national heroes and ready for the major challenge of Brazil.
07:28Unnoticed at the beginning of a tournament, the Swedes were now happy to relax in the national glare.
07:35And so to the final, Brazil the favourites against the host nation Sweden.
07:50In Stockholm, the two teams entered a much quieter stadium.
07:54The infamous cheerleaders were this time banned and it was football which Sweden had to rely on.
07:59As Brazil kicked off, one of the known obstacles to a Swedish victory was Pele, the youngest player ever in a World Cup final.
08:16But it was the Swedes who took the lead with a lead home shot from 18 yards.
08:36As the Brazilians resumed the match, Garincha received the ball from a Didi pass and shot strongly into the side netting.
08:52Swedish fears were realised soon after when Garincha passed his marker again and set up a goal for Vava, pushing the ball home from close range.
09:00Vava was to make it 2-1 to Brazil before half time.
09:19From the second half kick-off, Garincha still tees from the right wing.
09:23But it was Pele with excellent skill who made it 3-1 to the Brazilians, another great lesson in football.
09:39Zagallo, a future Brazilian coach, took advantage of poor Swedish defending to score his country's fourth goal.
09:45Sweden, shocked at the Brazilian comeback, managed to pull one back through Simonson.
10:03But the Brazilians were not finished and with vocal encouragement from the coach, Viola, raised their game again.
10:09Pele, rising high above the Swedish defence, headed in as Zagallo centre.
10:22At the final whistle, it was fair to say that Sweden had been beaten by one of the finest of World Cup teams.
10:28For the 17-year-old Pele, it was too much. The moment was too emotional for the young genius from Santos.
10:46And also for the more mature players. The Brazilians had won new friends even before they saluted the Swedish audience.
10:52The manner of this victory would alert many of football's European powers.
