00:00I can't imagine I've ever seen my signature bigger.
00:09Yeah, you're like a founding father.
00:11Here we go.
00:16We have our sheet music to our song Birds of a Feather from our new album Hit Me Hard
00:22and Soft.
00:23And we're going to break it down for you a little bit.
00:48There's a lot of songs about dying for somebody and loving them till they die.
00:53And I thought it was really fun to lean in and be like...
00:55To reverse it.
00:56No, literally though.
00:58Till I die, for real.
00:59And I'm in the grave and I'm rotting away.
01:03There's a line, I don't know if you should use this or whatever, but the first lyric
01:06we wrote was, I want you to stay.
01:08And then I have some lyrics in here which are all kind of just loving.
01:12We were like, oh we'll make a love song for the first time that doesn't have some sort
01:15of weird twist to it.
01:16And then we were like...
01:18We twisted it.
01:19We twisted it.
01:20We were coming up with all these rhymes and grave came up.
01:21So it kind of was already this happy sounding thing and then we just always love the juxtaposition
01:26of that with the lyrics.
01:28Here's the thing.
01:29With music, my whole thing is that it's for the listener to decide what it means.
01:34And it doesn't matter what I wrote it about, what Phineas wrote it about.
01:37It's like, it really doesn't matter as long as you interpret it however you need to.
01:41That's all you need to know.
01:42So don't take what I say to heart, but it's almost like someone slamming you into a wall
01:50and being like, you look really pretty.
01:53And you're like, wow, that's really a lot.
01:56That's what I wanted the verse to do.
01:58I wanted it to feel toxic and a little bit love-bomb-y.
02:03I have a hard time with the first lyrics, or the first time I am heard in a song because
02:13it's the most important part to me.
02:15So I will spend days and days and days trying to get the right take of the first line.
02:21This was probably the most challenging out of the entire album to sing.
02:26I'm so specific about what notes I'm doing.
02:28So even though they feel like I'm just going,
02:31I want you to stay.
02:32I'm like, da da da da da.
02:35I want you to stay.
02:37And it has to be this, da da.
02:38Stay.
02:39It's not, ah, it's not like a little slide.
02:42It's like two notes.
02:44This was not a happy album, like literally at all.
02:47This is how I wished that I was feeling, and I wasn't really, but I was like, I'm just
02:52gonna try to pretend.
02:58Two notes, y'all.
03:20Actually there's like a couple that are not there, hold on.
03:24Birds of a feather, wow, careful!
03:27This pre-chorus, so tough.
03:30Such a darn disaster.
03:31Might be a good time for me to pop this open for a second.
03:45So the thing that's really cool about that is, over top of that second chord in the progression,
03:49which is the B minor, we had her do this like real jazz part where she does like a minor-
03:53I said I'd never think I wasn't better alone.
03:58When I was touring, I would, I never did a singing lesson, I would never-
04:01Never even did a vocal warm-up.
04:02I never really did a vocal warm-up.
04:03I would do like five minutes of like-
04:05Lip trills.
04:06You know, your voice is truly like an instrument, and if you work on it and you train and you
04:11practice, you actually can strengthen it and actually get better, and I can't even tell
04:17you how big of a difference like training has done for me.
04:21It's been really incredible.
04:23And this song, I wouldn't have been able to sing it how I did and sing it on stage
04:27how I do without the training that I've been doing.
04:30It's really awesome.
04:35This is an awesome sentence to say.
04:39We should stick together.
04:41We kind of played with like, we should stay together, we should play together, or fly
04:45together, flock together.
04:46Birds of a feather flock together.
04:48And stick together just rolls off the tongue in a very satisfying way, so.
04:52This was another like, whoever is right wins with me and Phineas.
04:57What I love about the way that we work is it's not really like-
05:00Competitive.
05:01Yeah, we're not really competitive like that.
05:02It's really like best idea wins.
05:04And with this, I wanted it to be, might not be forever but if it's forever it's even better
05:12and I don't know what I'm crying.
05:16And Phineas was like, it's better if it goes, it's even better.
05:21I forgot all about that one.
05:23We overthought this sort of simple song so hard.
05:28So hard.
05:29Yeah, we kept getting lost in the maze on this song.
05:31This, I've never, I don't think we've ever overthought another song more.
05:35So glad it's popular.
05:36Thank God.
05:37It's such a pain.
05:38I was, there was like a period where we were considering not putting it on the album but
05:42thank God we didn't do that.
05:53Ooh, I see a place I want to mark up.
06:07Might not belong.
06:08Those are two different words.
06:10Might not belong.
06:12This was our big long lyrical puzzle.
06:16We rewrote that so many times we had different rhythms.
06:22We had this whole other part.
06:23Yeah, it's true.
06:24This.
06:25We didn't get that for seven months.
06:27I'll love you till the day that I die, when we hadn't set it up right, made no sense to
06:31us.
06:32And then it was about setting up that line right.
06:34Right.
06:35We kept saying it's like, how do you make I'll love you till the day that I die a punchline?
06:38Not just sort of like saccharine and meaningless.
06:41I know that I'll love you till the day that I die shouldn't be meaningless but it felt
06:44a little meaningless.
06:45It did.
06:46Before we got might not belong.
06:47Like, not necessarily gonna live another 80 years but I'll love you till the day that
06:50I die.
06:51Even if that's a few days.
06:52So that was our big setup.
06:54We had like different rhythms, different melodies.
06:56For a while it was, I know I should be terrified.
06:59What?
07:00Of what?
07:02We had like some like, I don't miss the way it was.
07:08And those also didn't feel truthful and they didn't feel like they were building to anything.
07:12And we also wanted to set up the I'll love you till the day that I die because it did
07:15feel kind of empty.
07:16So yeah, let's do the chorus.
07:17Let's see what happens.
07:18Oh, beautiful.
07:19Look at that.
07:21I love doing that.
07:25You guys killed that.
07:27Fixing stuff immediately?
07:28I just want context.
07:30Cause that's like technically even though that's the last line of the pre-chorus, it's
07:34like the start of the chorus.
07:35So.
07:36Ok, sorry.
07:37Now we can play the chorus.
07:38I'll love you till the day that I die.
07:39Till the day that I die.
07:40it
08:02and i never thought about how the end of the pre is the beginning of the chorus
08:06billionaires are a lot of this is a feeling like
08:08like i'll go i think you should be seen that chorus line videos
08:11okay and then i play it because this is what you think the chorus is that's a
08:14big part of like a big thing
08:16birds of a feather is a pre-chorus
08:19and then i don't know what i'm
08:21is the chorus
08:23and this is kind of like this
08:24post-chorus, this is like the post-chorus second half of the chorus, but it's the same deal
08:28it doesn't really matter does it
08:29we literally hated so much
08:32when we made it didn't we
08:33also i was singing it like
08:35die
08:37i was like very it was very guttural
08:41we have the demo of that version and it's really tough
08:45i listened to it recently and i was like
08:46it sounds like a horn
08:47but she did a bunch of beautiful harmonies on those dies too
09:06i love me some harmonies
09:09so funny we play you these things and we're like yeah there's a little bit of that
09:12seven hours
09:35the
09:51uh... i love that verse
09:53i have like such a love for second verses i feel like second verses
09:57especially for us
09:58all the best lyrics we've ever written are in the second verse weirdly
10:02i added that soundbite if you like
10:05yeah hang on it's so awesome
10:07we pulled that out
10:08there's a vocal trill
10:10it actually
10:15it's awesome
10:16do you have the original sound
10:19that's the original sound
10:21what am i saying
10:24cuz
10:25cuz the stranger
10:33wait
10:36that's amazing
10:37that's from
10:38getting older
10:40guys
10:41cuz the stranger
10:44we didn't even know that
10:46so that's the vocal from getting older from happier than ever
10:50that came out
10:51our second album came out in 2021
10:55but who would ever know
10:59part of my year of
11:02crisis
11:04i was gonna say i really loved the second verse at the time because
11:08different from i think the rest of the song where i said it was kind of like
11:11i was writing
11:13what i wanted to feel this verse was really how i did feel
11:17you know i want you to see how you look to me you wouldn't believe if i told ya
11:21like you're so obsessed with the idea that you're this
11:25unaccomplished
11:27ugly you know whatever somebody might talk down about themselves and think
11:32you don't even know how you look to me like in my mind
11:36you are
11:37beautiful
11:39special talented
11:41it's not actually possible to see ourselves how somebody else sees us but
11:45if it was
11:46you literally wouldn't believe it like you if i could
11:49give you my
11:51view of yourself you would be so shocked and so
11:55stoked cuz it's awesome
11:57you'd keep the compliments i throw you instead of
12:00discarding them and just keeping this wall around you would take them in and
12:04agree with them
12:05and then tell me it's a bit that one's interesting to me because i feel like people
12:08kind of hear it in a different way for me that's me being like
12:11tell me you're joking
12:13tell me that it's a bit that you don't see how amazing you are say you wanna
12:16quit don't be stupid
12:18that i wasn't referring to a relationship i was referring to like ones
12:23career and job and someone who's just really doubtful of themselves when they
12:27have so much talent
12:29i think there's like a note here
12:32yeah it's super small i love it i actually love this little part
12:37pretend this is here probably yeah
12:40this one goes down a half step which is really cool
12:48uh...
12:50i think it's no
12:51no
12:53this i tried a lot of different stuff with because i didn't
12:56know if it was good enough to just hold it
12:58so i tried a lot of like don't be stupid
13:02or like stupid
13:05and none of that it was kind of like so it was kind of performative
13:17there's lots of new lyrics to write
13:28and
13:46this is sister fried
13:49these are the lyrics that we rewrote
13:53when we rewrote the whole chorus the entire chorus because we were
13:57freaking out really freaking out so we rewrote the chorus and that was the
14:01part we heard before so the
14:03i don't know what i'm crying for
14:07and now we go to the belt you wanna go for it right now try to do it absolutely not but you
14:11could play the isolated vocal
14:23i remember like coming home and playing it for my parents at the time
14:26both of them were like
14:29it was so loud
14:30i mean it's literally shouting i'm shouting but
14:33that second to last note was all i was aiming for
14:36and then as i was doing it i was like
14:38it would be really cool if i went one more
14:42and i did it and it was awesome
14:56there were various moments of this song
15:05that felt really good the whole time and one of them was that outro
15:08that outro feels very happy feels like and sad
15:12feels both
15:13we started
15:14this song on i think february sixteenth
15:16of twenty twenty three
15:17we didn't finish it until
15:20literally january of the next year so long really a long time
15:25i think sometimes you feel more ownership over something if it took you
15:27a long time
15:28sometimes when stuff happens really quickly
15:31you're like wow i feel grateful for that but
15:33you might not feel like the sort of sweat
15:36that went into it
15:38well i am incredibly happy and proud of this song
15:42we've figured it out
15:44and we like it
15:46and people are
15:47understanding it really understanding it and loving it and it makes me really really happy
15:51it just went platinum
15:53which is so fast and insane
15:55i thought this was my flop song
15:57we thought maybe this was the flop album but we loved it
16:17thanks everybody
