Bien qu'il soit né au Texas d'une mère célibataire, Barry White grandit dans les banlieues mal-famées de Los Angeles et fut membre d'un gang dès l'âge de dix ans. À dix-sept ans, il fut condamné pour le vol des pneus d'une voiture à quatre mois de prison.
Il fut notamment l'interprète de I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby (1973), Never, Never Gonna Give You Up (1973), Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe (1974), You're the First, the Last, My Everything (1974), What Am I Gonna Do With You (1975), Let the Music Play (1976), Your Sweetness is My Weakness, Just the way you are (1978), Change (1982), Sho' You Right (1987), et Practice What You Preach (1994). Boulimique de travail, Barry White que l'on surnomme "le morse", pour sa taille imposante, mais également "le maestro de l'amour", connait son âge d'or au milieu des années 1970. Entre 1973 et 1976, il a produit la bagatelle de 11 albums, du jamais vu dans l'industrie du disque.
Il avait débuté dans la profession à la fin des années 1960, en produisant le trio féminin emmené par celle qui allait devenir sa future femme, Glodean James, trio qu'on allait découvrir sous le nom de Love Unlimited.

Il fut notamment l'interprète de I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby (1973), Never, Never Gonna Give You Up (1973), Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe (1974), You're the First, the Last, My Everything (1974), What Am I Gonna Do With You (1975), Let the Music Play (1976), Your Sweetness is My Weakness, Just the way you are (1978), Change (1982), Sho' You Right (1987), et Practice What You Preach (1994). Boulimique de travail, Barry White que l'on surnomme "le morse", pour sa taille imposante, mais également "le maestro de l'amour", connait son âge d'or au milieu des années 1970. Entre 1973 et 1976, il a produit la bagatelle de 11 albums, du jamais vu dans l'industrie du disque.
Il avait débuté dans la profession à la fin des années 1960, en produisant le trio féminin emmené par celle qui allait devenir sa future femme, Glodean James, trio qu'on allait découvrir sous le nom de Love Unlimited.
À la fin des années 1990, Barry White était devenu un personnage quasi récurrent de la série télévisée Ally McBeal.
Victime d'un accident vasculaire cérébral (AVC) en mai 2003, il dut se retirer de la vie publique. Il mourut deux mois plus tard au Cedars Sinai Hospital à Hollywood, Los Angeles. Barry White est sûrement un des plus grands chanteurs des années disco. Il était le père de neuf enfants, de quatre femmes différentes, dont deux hors mariage.
Selon des proches, ses derniers mots sur son lit de mort auraient été, "Laissez-moi seul, je vais bien."

Chic est un groupe de funk américain qui a été fondé en 1976 par le guitariste Nile Rodgers, le batteur Tony Thompson et le bassiste Bernard Edwards.
Leurs plus grand succès ont été les chansons funk Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah) (1977), Everybody Dance (1977), Le Freak(1978), I Want Your Love (1978), Good Times (1979), et My Forbidden Lover (1979).
En 1980 le groupe produit un album pour la chanteuse française Sheila, son titre phare "Spacer" devient un succès international.
Ensuite dans les années 1980, le groupe ne survit pas à la fin de la mode disco. Cependant dans de nombreuses conventions de disques, les albums de Chic de la période funky se vendent très bien. L'album Take it off est le plus recherché chez les DJ funk. Au début des années 1990, Rodgers et Edwards reformèrent le groupe et enregistrèrent de nouveaux albums. Après la mort d'Edwards en 1996, le groupe coutinua à se produire sur scène avec de nouveaux musiciens.

Après le succès en Hollande et en Belgique du titre Baby Do You Wanna Bump?, le producteur allemand Frank Fabian crée en Allemagne en 1976 le groupe Boney M. Il recrute les chanteurs de studio Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams et Bobby Farrell. Le quatuor signe son premier album Take the Heat Off Me puis connaît le succès avec le titre Daddy Cool en 1977. Sunny, Ma Baker et Belfast sont également des hits. En 1978, Boney M est au sommet de sa popularité avec les tubes Rivers of Babylon et Brown Girl in the Ring. Il signe l'album Nightlife to Venus et le single Rasputin. En 1979, il enregistre l'album Oceans of Fantasy. Suivent entre autre Malaika (1981), Boonoonoonoos (1982) et Kalimba de Luna (1985). A la fin des années 80, le producteur Frank Fabian crée le groupe Milli Vanilli. Boney M renoue avec le succès en 1994 avec une compilation de ses plus grands succès.
