Moby Natural Blues
...« Money » des Pink Floyd et « Birthday » des Beatles. Optant pour un genre musical radical, Moby forme son premier groupe punk, les Vatican Commandos, en 1980. Vers la scène techno [modifier] Tout en gardant l'agressivité des débuts, il s'ouvre vers d'autres styles de musique et reçoit en 1983 son premier enregistreur 4 pistes qu'il installe dans la cave de sa mère. Cette même année, il entre à l'université de Connecticut dont il ressort vite, dès 1984, pour s'installer comme DJ au Beat, à Port Chester dans l'état du New York. Commence une période pénible : en 1986, Moby déménage de Darien à Greenwich, Connecticut et squatte d'abord dans un vaste hangar, puis à Stamford, Connecticut, dans une usine à moitié abandonnée et sans eau courante tout en s'imposant comme DJ résident au club MARS de New York. En 1989, Moby éveille finalement l'intérêt d'un nouveau label new-yorkais, Instinct Records. Le musicien finit par emménager dans un appartement sombre et sale de New York, au croisement de la 14e Rue et de la 3e Avenue. La même année, il connait un premier succès d'estime avec le groupe Ultra Vivid Scene, dont l'album sort sur le label 4AD.
