A city sues a parking meter Robin Hood group.
A group going around Keene, New Hampshire and putting money in expired parking meters is being sued by the city government for preventing parking tickets and allegedly harassing parking enforcement officers.
The organized group of people is known for putting coins into expired parking meters and leaving a note that says: “Your meter expired; however, we saved you from the king’s tariffs, Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Please consider paying it forward.”
They also leave an address where grateful citizens can send donations.
Robin Hood and his Merry Men have been accused of following and video recording the parking enforcement officers and verbally abusing them, so the government is trying to make members stay 50 feet away from the parking enforcement officers. The group claims to have prevented thousands of parking tickets and the city is upset over the lost revenue.
One Australian strategy of dealing with expired parking meters is a much sexier idea that has been working for almost fifty years.
To cope with parking meters being installed on the tourist strip in Surfers Paradise, women known as Meter Maids were hired to walk around in gold bikinis, feeding coins into expired meters, and leaving flyers on the window.
