Outbreak of Cicadas Is Inevitable

An outbreak of cicadas may be inevitable.

Most bugs love warm weather just as much as humans. Scientists have recently reported that cicadas are making a big comeback after 17 years of resting underground.

It is being predicted that a full scale outbreak of the winged bugs is bound to happen around the East Coast. John Cooley, a cicadas expert at the University of Connecticut states “It's fair to say it's starting, but it's still in the very early stages.”

The expected army of billions of bugs will burrow out of the ground between April and June when soil temperatures reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit and fly around in swarms. Luckily the insects are not a threat to people.

There are over 3,000 different species of cicadas. While some make an appearance annually, the 17-year cicadas garner loads of attention.

These cicada nymphs spend the young stages of their lives underground, getting nourishment from plant roots. They finally surface above ground as adults.

With broad heads, huge eyes and transparent membrane wings, their appearance is just as unique as their signature clicking and buzzing sounds which are amplified when the insects are in groups, creating an almost deafening humming noise.
