Just when the Vail/Beaver Creek Mountains were scheduled to close for the winter season, mother nature had a different plan... We received over 57 inches throughout the week after the mountains "closed." One of the largest snowfalls we've received in recent history prompted Vail to reopen for another weekend of fun.

Meantime, the Backyard Playground crew was having some fun in the deep stuff by snowshoeing back up Beaver Creek mountain.

Tragically, six backcountry enthusiasts lost their lives in our backyard throughout the storm. All were considered experts in backcountry safety. Joe Timlin was a beloved Vail Valley local and rep for YES, NOW, and Jones Snowboards. Donations in memory of Joe can be made by following the link: paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=Na_sXG1lxaLSXwArjIyyw1buJYmtETCYo2eZgdOVbar_HrZ4wGp2D33RsC0&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8d96fc0752e9614158f04872d2f2ae25dc

Ian Lamphere was also killed in the Loveland Pass avalanche. Money is being raised to help cover expenses for his fiancé and daughter: indiegogo.com/projects/fund-for-madelyn
